Stereotyping ~ More Thoughts to Ponder

We have all stereotyped at one time of the other. Even if we go back to “Boys have cooties” and “Girls have cooties”.

People try to define their place in society. The “mundane majority” has taught us to focus primarily on differences to define ourselves and to accept that the differences are “less” or inferior to what we possess.

On the spiritual path, we are even more intensively attempting to define ourselves and by the very nature of this process, sometimes, we engage in even more stereotyping to determine what we “are not”. It is much easier to focus on what we “are not” rather than what we “are”. But we limit ourselves when we do not see that it is a “tool” and we make “judgments”, especially illogical judgments by random appearances. Then the tool becomes prejudice and intolerance and leads us in the opposite direction of productive growth into superiority issues and “us versus them group” mentality.

A good clue is the word “All” and “Always”. Be sure that those two really apply when you are speaking and defining yourself.

Ignorance and lack of experience is often the basis for prejudicial stereotyping. For example, if I popped into an isolated tribe of pygmies. They might think that all redheads are tall and have blue eyes. They might think that everyone with red hair has attributes that we might know are unique to me as an individual.

“We” would know otherwise, because we have more education about and have been exposed to more of a variety of redheads than the pygmies have. When a second redhead pops in and has different traits, then the pygmies begin to realize that some redheads are this way and some redheads are another way. The preliminary stereotype (while valid to them at the time) is no longer valid through education and experience.

The biggest downfall of stereotyping is to assume and/or accept that they are absolute truths rather than limited opinions and to utilize them as such rather than “guides” for expanding our spiritual path.

Sometimes, stereotyping is a survival tool:

I tell my children not to go near stray dogs because they are dangerous.

Does this mean that all stray dogs are dangerous? No. But, the danger of a stray dog having rabies and biting them is a serious possibility. It is such a possibility that I do not want to endanger the health of my children because it might not have rabies. The risks outweigh the possibility of the dog not being rabid.

We can all understand this stereotype and its necessity. The important part of the stereotype is that I know that it does not apply to ALL dogs. Just because a small proportion of dogs may be stray and a proportion of strays might be rabid and that a proportion of those might cause harm to my children, does not automatically equate that every dog will harm my children.

Stereotypes should be flexible and a tool to help us make important judgments for situations. Not dictate a belief system or a universal truth. If we begin to believe that a stereotype is a universal truth, then we should logically first suspect that we either do not have enough education or exposure to make that determination and we should investigate whether or not it is, indeed, a stereotype that we are assuming to be a universal truth.

Thought to Ponder – What is the difference between a stereotype and an archetype and how can the lines between the two cross?

Stereotyping and Misjudgments

SOME METHODS TO APPROACH STEREOTYPING AND JUDGMENTS

1. CHECK YOUR LOGIC AND REASONING. Sometimes, it’s not the logical process that is faulty or in question, but our intent behind the logical process that reveals a lot. Sometimes when we focus on the differences so much, we do become prejudice because we forget something very important from the beginning in sorting out facts. Some does not mean all.

2. CHECK WHETHER THIS IS SOMETHING YOU LEARNED FROM OTHERS RATHER THAN DRAWING YOUR OWN CONCLUSION WITH A PROPER APPROACH TO THE FACTS.

The “mundane majority” often tries to perceive Some as All in getting the majority to adhere to certain beliefs. It’s a technique that we can debunk and choose not to assimilate into the pagan community.

Look seriously at where you acquired this All focus from. Parents? Other events? (I saw your post about this, but I want to put this out anyway as a method for all of us in busting stereotypes). If say, you were beaten by three black men. Then, look in your past for something that occurred involving other races OR BELIEFS as well. Have you ever had a fight with a white man or a couple of white men? Perhaps, then the focus can then be more aptly placed on the violence issue rather than a racial issue.

If you don’t have a direct comparison, then look for the next closest. What I would suggest you focus on from the facts that you presented in this thread is that not all black people are violent and that not all black people fit your stereotype. Change your focus, approach, and interpretation of the “facts” to support the other side of your stereotype issues.

3. COMPARE IT TO A STEREOTYPE OR PREJUDICE THAT DIRECTLY AFFECTS YOU, YOU BELIEFS, OR SOMEONE OR SOMETHING CLOSE TO YOU AND THINK ABOUT HOW YOU WOULD HANDLE THE PREJUDICE.

Take the focus off of color for a moment and look at the difficulties Asatru and other Nordic / Germanic paganistic belief systems have encountered for example. (They have been associated in mainstream culture with Nazism. For the longest time, Asatru were denied a voice or even an opinion because of this association. For a long time, Asatru had difficulties even being accepted in the pagan communities because even pagans and Wiccans did not want to be stereotyped with Nazis and many felt that they already had enough stereotypes being a pagan and/or Wiccan to bust a Nazi stereotype mixed in.

What advice would you give to someone who has the Nazi prejudice against your belief system? If they sincerely wanted to understand? First, you would have to say that while there may be SOME, it is certainly not ALL, right?

So how do we all bust our prejudices or at least keep them in a proper place in our minds.
Change your focus from All to Some and desensitize yourself by putting yourself in places to meet people who do not fit the “stereotype”.

4. DESENSITIZE AND EXPOSE YOURSELF TO THAT WHICH DEBUNKS YOUR OWN STEREOTYPING.

Become more familiar with the stereotypes.

If you have a stereotype that all black men are violent, then don’t go visit prison to speak to black men to debunk that. That is just for purposes of reinforcing and not being productive. Go “undercover”. Go to a really good African American Church and look for the good works that the black men do there. Speak to the black man who stands for his family and his community. In fact, I would recommend that you speak to a pastor of an African American Church and explain that you are trying to debunk your stereotype issues and want to meet established black men. As long as you don’t go all pagan on them, they are usually more than happy to help you. If they say something about pagan, just explain that you want to focus on your stereotype issues right now.

5. ACCEPT AND FORGIVE YOURSELF.

You may never “completely” emotionally get over a stereotype, but you can control it and keep it in its proper place. We are very complex psychologically and sometimes, it may take far more time than a few days or weeks to overcome a stereotype, but you can reach a point in the journey where you acknowledge and appreciate your own spiritual growth and willingness to deal with such things, by acknowledging that you are working on it.

Stereotyping and judging is a method of survival, but it is also a completely overused tool by the “mundane majority”. It is when we have a FIXED AND IMPERMEABLE stereotype or judgment not based on (or misunderstood as) as universal truth that we spiritually become STAGNANT and fail to progress. Spirituality is a journey ~ an ever evolving journey.

Remember, you are showing your own great strength by tackling your own stereotypes and judgments.

Brightest of Blessings and may the Lord and Lady help to guide you through these difficult spiritual obstacles on your path..

Male Mysteries – The Male Movement

“I do think, though, that once the spirit is manifest in a physical body and therefore acquires a gender, spirituality becomes maybe less important for men than it is for women. And the reason I’m saying this is because men are just not that interested in consciousness raising, otherwise they would have created a vigorous men’s movement by now that would be promoting it.” [Daughter of the Goddess - An interview with Z. Budapest by Susan Bridle at http://www.enlightennext.org/magazine/j10/budapest.asp?page=2]

Where is the vigorous men’s movement? It is right here and it is beginning now.

It is not based on disempowering women who have fought so hard and continue to fight so hard for their rights. It is a movement by men and empowered women who realize that while we have (and still are) freeing our sisters and daughters, that it is time to return and reclaim our sons so that they can join us and forge a new future for us all.

I want to state that I do very much admire Z.Budapest and others for the efforts that have been made in empowering and freeing women in society and the pursuit of religious freedom. It has been a large, hard fought battle to break women out of the bedrooms and kitchens and restore them to their rightful place. I have no intention of minimalizing their important and good works in their attempts to restore female balance in a good and productive manner. However, as societal consciousness must evolve from male centered environment to empowering women, the time has come to prepare to evolve into a spiritual balance for us all. It is time for something more.

What price did we pay and are paying in the women’s movement? Who really paid and is still paying the price? Women willing threw themselves and their daughters on the battle lines as a price worth paying for the freedoms.

A lot of men supported and empowered and joined women on the front line of the battle ground because they, too, knew it was right and just and oftentimes have been rewarded as having to be the face that represents “The Man” who oppressed women. Many men have taken the punishment for the past crimes of their forefathers and many women have felt justified in continuing the punishment.

Just at it was unjust to blame and stereotype all women and relegate them to the bedroom and kitchen because they inherited their mother’s vaginas, we must learn to not propagate the injustice by spiritually abandoning and disempowering our sons and men because they inherited a penis.

The path for some will be solely in women’s mysteries and this is just and right.

The path for some will be solely in men’s mysteries and this also is just and right.

But the path for others is the path of mutual empowerment and if this must be called the “Men’s Movement”, then so be it. I, who have many titles including professional, mother, wife, friend, sister, and wytch, am willing to stand for this path of balance.

Male Mysteries – Phallic Symbols – Maypole & Beltaine

There are many symbols and signs in pagan traditions and religions that venerate the phallus as the representation of the active male force of nature.  Several representations are present in the Beltaine (May Day) practices, such as the Maypole shown above.

The purpose of the veneration during fertility rites was to impart and encourage the fertilizing male forces to stimulate the growth of crops, animals, and all of nature.  While the initial budding and greening has already begun prior to Beltaine, the purpose of the Beltaine fertility rite is fertilization of the blossoms and greening buds into fruitful maturity for a bountiful harvest and more amicable breeding conditions throughout the year.

Male Mysteries – The Calling

lolake

I am the voice in the night
Rise up and come to me
Break your bindings and seek
The freedom only imagained
Manifested into reality
It is here if you come to me

As the Mother to her son
I will call you by ancient name
And offer the mightiest sword
Your bride, known only to me,
Shall be delivered to the altar
To await your touch and company

I am the voice in the night
Rise up and come to me
Far from comfort of childish things
Set aside fears of unknown quantity
Follow the song of mysteries
I illumine the path of man’s destiny

Male Mysteries – Dealing with Reactions

I have come to accept that a good portion of men and women have some latent anger issues with regard to the Goddess God gap. Fortunately, I have found that of those (after they have taken that first swing at me for having boobies), then have gotten a little steam off and begin to realize what we are trying to do. They (and we all) have to accept that there will be latent emotions cropping up and that some people (men and women) will need more time to understand this isn’t about widening the gap or returning to past misconceptions and misplaced perceptions. They just need time.

We also have to accept that some people will just never be comfortable with the balanced approach and that’s okay, too, and that’s what make pagansim so wonderful in our society. We don’t all have to walk the same walk.

Everyone has to travel their own path to the center. This “movement” is making one path a little more accessible for those that wish to travel upon it or just to understand it. I say what needs to be said and do my Matrix move, if necessary, and go about my Service Path.

The important part is to remember to not let yourself get overly distracted because another may not understand or might be, in fact, trying to inhibit or stop what is a necessary evolution in the community.
